The queen stage of the Giro d'Italia 2021 is a symbol of safe cycling

from 24/05/21

The international association of cyclists Cyclistes Professionnels Associes (CPA) celebrated a safe queen stage of the Giro d'Italia despite the difficult weather conditions. As early as 23 May the CPA consulted with all team representatives and worked with the organisers of the corsa rosa to agree to shorten the route of Stage 16. The changes meant riders avoided two descents that with the rain and cold at high altitude would have put riders at risk of hypothermia and not being able to ride safely.

The CPA delegate at the Giro, former professional cyclist Cristian Salvato, from Cortina d'Ampezzo comments, "The queen stage was fantastic on paper, but as we saw from the TV images we were able to admire, the weather conditions today were brutal. Working with RCS Sport, the CPA ensured that riders’ voices could be heard and that riders got to the finish line without taking too many risks. We consulted with all the riders' representatives and the majority demanded a change in the route. We apologise for the fans who were waiting for us on Fedaia and Pordoi. Those who ride bikes know what it means to face long descents in wet and cold weather at altitude. The athletes honoured the race and put on a show. From the first kilometre over the Passo Giau and the descent to the finish, it was a real race”.

The CPA fights for the safety of riders, as evidenced by its efforts to improve regulations and barriers. A CPA delegate attends every World Tour race to act as an intermediary between the riders and the organisers and ensures that riders’ voices are heard as a collective. Common sense and cooperation between the parties involved in cycling prevailed at the Giro today.
